For two months, I had the opportunity to join QuantumDiamonds, contributing to the development of next-generation testing tools to push the boundaries of semiconductor failure analysis. For this we are using magnetic quantum sensing based on defects in diamond lattices, effectively imaging the current density in samples.
Being a hardware lab intern for two months, I have learned the experimental realization of a Nitrogen Vacancy (NV) based quantum sensing setup, especially as the entire optical path as well as the control electronics have been rebuilt by me and a colleague to increase measurement sensitivity and usability for potential customers. Some new key learnings of mine are listed below:
• Fundamental insights in the semiconductor industry
• Creating technical drawings for setup housings
• Setup of Leica Visora Material Microscope
• Resin-based (SLA) 3D printing
• CAD design (this time with Autodesk Fusion instead of SolidWorks)
Being at QuantumDiamonds showed me that in StartUps roles are not rigid and can dynamically change, such that I was also able to experience the business perspective. More precisely I was very fortunate to be able to execute customer projects and report the results as well as getting the opportunity to create marketing material (a QD m.0 manual), simplifying the complex quantum phenomena of the measurement principle and increasing usability of our first commercially sold magnetic field microscope.
Finally, I would like to thank the entire QD team, especially the Hardware Team consisting of Huseyin Bahadir Yay, Bethia Kynn ,Fatima Taleb, Gargi Kodgirwar, Klavdia Kontou, Nimba Oshnik, Philipp Siebrecht, Riley McCue and Ruben Wernsdorfer for always being available for questions and making these two months so memorable. I also want to thank Henrik Scholz for a very nice application interview and his support regarding various non-hardware related things and Athina Poupa for a welcoming onboarding and her support during the start of my internship.
I specifically want to thank my supervisor Andreas Welscher as well as Marwa Garsi and Markus Schieber for leading the Hardware team. Finally, a big thanks also goes to the two Co-Founders Kevin Berghoff and Fleming Bruckmaier for pushing our vision and creating an inclusive, fast-paced and productive work environment.
