This summer I had the opportunity to attend the WE-Heraeus and NARIT Summer School on Astrophysics in Chiang Mai (Thailand 🇹🇭) and present my work at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Institute of Quantum Technologies (IQT), where I contributed to the realization of a photonic quantum memory based on an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) protocol in a Rubidium magneto-optical trap as part of an internship this year. The project specifically aims to miniaturize such systems for satellite deployment, paving the way for global quantum communication.

Despite having my primary background in quantum physics, astrophysics always accompanied me during my studies, as it was one of the main motivations for me personally to study physics. During my Bachelor at Heidelberg University I attended the lecture series Astronomy I, Astronomy II, Physics of Interstellar Travel and participated in the Astrophysical Laboratory. Last year, during my semester abroad at University of Bristol (England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿) I took the opportunity to take lectures on General Relativity and Cosmology. As a conclusion it was a great pleasure to present science combining both quantum physics as well as astrophysics – or in other words bringing my main area of expertise in contact with the original roots of my interest in physics.

One clear highlight of this summer school was the visit of the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT), including a planetarium show, an exhibition and a tour through the mirror fabrication facilities for astronomical telescopes.

In the end I want to thank the organizing committee, especially Dr. Noam Libeskind as well as the over 100 participants that found their way to Thailand for this incredible experience!
