This week 100 years of quantum sciences were celebrated as part of the Bavarian Quantum Day. For this occasion, representatives of my study program “Quantum Science and Technology”, a joint master program of the Technical University of Munich and the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich) were invited by the Bavarian Minister-President Dr. Markus Söder and the Bavarian State Minister of Science and the Art Markus Blume to join the State reception "100 Years of Quantum: From Theory to Transformation" at the Munich Residence.
For me personally this Bavarian Quantum Day demonstrated nicely how close academia and industry interact, reflecting Munich’s unique position at the intersection of science and entrepreneurship. On the academic side, institutions such as TUM, LMU, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften), and the Max Planck Society have built one of Europe’s strongest research landscapes in quantum science. On the other hand, initiatives like UnternehmerTUM and TUM Venture Labs Quantum are fostering a vibrant start-up culture and providing the infrastructure for deep-tech ventures to grow.
At the heart of this ecosystem stands Munich Quantum Valley (MQV), an academic alliance of leading Bavarian institutions that has become a key bridge between research and industry. Due to this crucial role, the former Director General of the MQV, Prof. Dr. Joachim Ullrich was honored with the “Pro Meritis Scientiae Et Litterarum” award for his initiative of establishing the MQV as globally visible quantum ecosystem.
Despite the formal setting, this event was a great opportunity to informally connect with a very diverse audience from research, politics and industry as well as to reconnect with familiar faces from several former quantum events.
